Y U NO TIMING CHAIN. My Renault will be due a timing belt in the next year or so (interval is 72k or 5 years) the car has done 35k and is 4 and a half years old. All the others I viewed were several years overdue for a belt (some were even overdue an oil change), it seems people rarely bother to change them.

My Panda used a chain and my gfs Micra uses a chain too. There should be chains on every car, belts are terrible. The price to change one at a shop can apparently range from £400 to £1000. I'll probably just do it myself.

Ah, but timing chains on an Audi, that's another matter entirely...

Yeah I've heard about that whole deal on the S4. To be fair my Panda had a bit of a chain rattle when cold and will probably need a new one and new guides in the next couple years. That's probably a worse job than changing my timing belt.

Chains are great, as long as they dont go too crazy with them.

Timing chains aren't perfect either, but still better than a belt IMO. Also, interference engines FTMFL.

So many horror stories about those audis.

you don't want to know about GM HFV6 timing chains either.

also used in some Alfa Romeos

I'd rather have a chain for sure. We had an 82k miles Micra with no chain rattle that ran great. My Twingo will likely be on it's third belt by then.

I was looking up the timing belt job recently for our '08 Passat (just over 100K miles) and was very pleased to discover it has a chain! Bonus!

I wish mine was. At least it's an easy job since it's SOHC the belt only goes around the cam, crank, water pump and tensioner.

mainly not failures as such , just stretching and triggering CEL , and at AUD$2500 to fix , yeah not great!

mind you have had a couple of them break.

My mother has had many Micras and she just has belts changed when they broke. You can get away with that on a non interference engine. Not on my FTO though so I'm on no. 3.

Do the newer Micras not use chains? Our 2002s do.

Ouch, timing belts sound cheap compared to that.

100% this. While a chain would be preferable at least make it so that the rubber wear item won't destroy the engine if it fails.

Not that I'm an expert or anything...but as an aero engineer the idea of a single point catastrophic failure makes me cringe so hard

They may well do - many makers have abandoned belts for reliability and space reasons - but this was a Mk1.

I show this picture to people any time they talk about how great audis are. I wouldn't touch an audi off warranty with a ten foot pole.

I was pretty set on getting a car with a chain, I did last time, but I just liked this car enough to put up with it. At least I can do the swap myself for less than £150.
